Working at Home: Focusing

Some people who work out of the home can often have a hard time staying focused and there are a number of reasons for this. Sometimes the urgency of being in the office creates a kind of overly relaxed atmosphere when approaching work from the home, making it easier to become distracted. Sometimes it’s all too tempting to work on the things that need doing around the house instead of focusing on your work. Whatever the case, it can be hard to maintain your focus but we can help.

For starters, you are going to want to eliminate as many distractions as possible. If you can manage it, get as far away from the television and any windows as possible. You can still get your sunlight, just try not to sit directly next to a window where you can peek outside and become distracted. Another distraction, believe it or not, is the internet itself and if you get your service through places XO Communications at www.t1internet.net, a Tier 1 Provider, then it’s all the easier to lose focus on work for other things like email and shopping. If you are working on something that doesn’t require the internet, then consider disconnecting from it for a while.

Another great idea is to designate a “work zone” like a den or a study in your home. Make this your place where business, real business not funny business, is conducted and stick to that rule. And, after all this, if you are still having trouble focusing on your work then take a break. Do whatever is pressing. Send that email, order that book, walk the dog – just clear your head and then come back to the task at hand. You might find that was all you needed.
